[PICTURES] Esther Passaris Takes a Train Ride from Ruiru to Nairobi

If you have ever used a Nairobi commuter train, then you know the hustle that passengers have to go through in those overcrowded coaches. First the people who don’t have seats are more than those seated.

Only hustlers who can’t afford the normal fare, especially during peak hours opt for Nairobi trains. On Friday morning, there was a very unlikely passenger though. I am talking about Nairobi Women Rep Esther Passaris.

Mama County wanted to know, the effectiveness of commuter trains and the challenges that commuters go through. So she decided she would take a train from Ruiru to town.

The County MP, sat among excited passengers and gladly took selfies that have been shared online.  She described the journey as illuminating. And at the end of the trip, she recommended some few changes that can make it worthwhile.

First toilets are not in good condition and “should be repaired expeditiously to avert accidents and injuries, especial for children.”

She also recommended that the authority should sensitize the public on vandalism. Employing more security personnel can help.

The Nairobi commuter trains are used by thousands of Nairobians. The fare is relatively cheaper. They are also very convenient. No traffic jams.

We hope the management of Kenya Railways will factor in the recommendations to improve service delivery.
