Gareth Southgate has confirmed that Luke Shaw will miss Manchester United’s game with Watford due to a “mandatory” week-long concussion recovery period.

Shaw made his return to the England fold on Saturday in the Nations League defeat to Spain.

The left-back provided a quite wonderful assist for Marcus Rashford’s opener, before making a mistake in the build-up to Spain’s equaliser.

A promising evening was cut short when he clashed heads with Dani Carvajal early in the second half, and was stretchered off with a concussion.

Shaw has recovered well, but will miss the return to Premier League action as he must rest for a seven-day period.

“You never like to see an incident like that, that you can see is immediately potentially serious,” England manager Gareth Southgate said.

“He was obviously knocked out before he hit the floor. Our medical team dealt with that really well I think. He’s spent the last day with us for some recovery and he has gone back to his club this afternoon.

“All being well, he has a mandatory seven-day period that he has to serve with the concussion, but he should be back in the fold as soon as that’s done.”
