Raheem Sterling is expected to be in contention to start Manchester City’s clash with Fulham immediately after the international break, despite withdrawing from the Englandsquad. The winger pulled out of the upcoming games against Spain and Switzerland due to a back injury.

Sterling didn’t join up with the rest of Gareth Southgate’s squad at St George’s Park on Monday, after feeling discomfort following Saturday’s 2-1 win against Newcastle.

Instead City’s medical department consulted with their counterparts at the FA when it was determined he didn’t need to report for duty to be assessed by Southgate’s own staff. But the problem is not believed to be serious, with his absence more of a precautionary measure.

City hope a two-week lay-off during the international window – following a heavy summer at the World Cup – will be enough to rectify the issue in time for the resumption of the Premier League.
