Anthony Martial is one of four players Manchester United deem ‘central’ to their future. Martial has been rather surprisingly offered a new long-term contract at United, despite considerable doubts over his time at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho. Some reports suggest the French international feels he can ‘outlast’ the manager, and could therefore commit his future to the club. It sums up the United mess quite neatly, really.

Mourinho was understood to have been keen to sell Martial this summer to generate funds that he could use to further strengthen his squad. But executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward refused to acquiesce, standing firm on his stance that Martial would not be sold.

According to sources , the 22-year-old is one of four players Woodward is adamant he will not sell.

‘Woodward refused to sanction moves for two Mourinho transfer targets this summer – Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur or Leicester City and England centre-half Harry Maguire – much to the manager’s frustration,’ the article states.

‘Mourinho no longer has control over transfer matters and the club’s willingness to give a lucrative new contract to a player he does not wish to keep further undermines his position.

‘Martial, along with Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, is considered to be central to United’s future by Woodward and his allies and they were unwilling to entertain the idea of selling the player signed from Monaco by Louis van Gaal, Mourinho’s predecessor, in 2015.’

So not only does he have four ‘fantasy’ players, but he has four ‘unsellables’ too.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho should do more to defend Victor Lindelof, according to Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Lindelof started United’s opening two Premier League matches before being dropped to the bench against Tottenham.

His performance as a second-half substitute in that 3-0 defeat left plenty to be desired from a player who has struggled since joining for £30.75m in summer 2017.

But Eriksson feels his compatriot deserves more support from his manager.

“I have to say he did two great mistakes last match I thought. And he was lucky he got away with it, both of them,” Eriksson told Sky Sports.

“But you don’t expect that from him. But, anyhow, we’re talking about a very good football player.”
