There has been a lot of transfer activity made by United this summer, but it’s largely been one way – out. A number of academy players were named on their Premier League released list and ran their contracts out with the Red Devils this summer. Others were fortunate enough to find themselves a new club before having their deal terminated, avoiding the ignominy of being a free agent. Then there are those who could yet have a future with the Manchester giants, having instead been loaned out and given an opportunity to impress the monitoring scouts.

Jose Mourinho has given an update on Phil Jones’ condition after the defender was forced off in the second half of Manchester United’s 3-0 home defeat to Spurs.

Mourinho chased a new central defensive signing all summer, and has not hidden his unhappiness at failing to bring anyone in.He started the season with a centre-back partnership of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof , but they both made mistakes in the 3-2 loss at Brighton and were replaced on Monday night.

In came Jones and Chris Smalling, with Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic taking on more defensive duties in an experimental formation.

However, all three Tottenham goals came from mistakes from United’s back line – including Harry Kane’s opener where Jones was caught out from a corner.
