Manchester United boss Mourinho is facing the biggest challenge of his managerial career with the doom and gloom mood around the Red Devils increasing by the game.

Long gone are the days where Sir Alex Ferguson would steer them to silverware aplenty, with the Scot yet to be sufficiently replaced since his retirement five years ago.

Mourinho has clashed with a number of Manchester United players throughout his time in charge, with Martial, Bailly and Paul Pogba among his most high-profile rifts.

And the Sun say the current Red Devils squad are scared to approach Mourinho. At present, United are standing by their man.

Vice executive-chairman Ed Woodward is reluctant to wield the axe so early into the season, particularly given how much he has backed Mourinho throughout his time at the club. The 55-year-old showed there is hunger still inside him with his explosive remarks after Monday’s 3-0 tanking to Tottenham.

But history suggests his sulky demeanour will lead to the axe in due course.

The Sun say United players are scared to approach Mourinho amid his sullen mood, and are also critical of his tactics behind closed doors.

Martial and Bailly were reportedly left hurt after missing the Tottenham game.

And members of the squad are left baffled by Mourinho’s decision to deploy Ander Herrera in a centre-back position.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has been slammed by pundit Craig Burley for citing his three Premier League title triumphs as proof of his prowess after the Tottenham game.

“Historically speaking, Ferguson had 13 Premier League titles, it’s unprecedented,” Burley said on ESPN FC.

“The problem is, United don’t want to look historically and that’s what Mourinho is doing.

“Everybody that supports Man Utd and wants them to be successful wants to look forward.

“So they’re not really interested in what Mourinho did at previous clubs or how many titles he won.

“It’s like every fan. They want to know how you’re going to help their club and how you’re going to drag back Manchester City.

“I don’t think anybody is going to buy this historical tournament.”
