Jose  Mourinho has changed tack with his Manchester United players in a bid to get the best out them for Monday’s Old Trafford showdown with Tottenham. There has been a lot of tough love from Mourinho over the last 12 months with his players.

Many have been outed publicly for underperforming.

None more so than Paul Pogba, with whom the relationship has been strained as the manager bids to get the sort of performances out of the club’s record-buy that he showed in winning the World Cup. But since the disappointing defeat at Brighton, Mourinho has gone for the softly, softly approach and spent the last week putting his arm around his players.

Many have been surprised by his sudden change of mood.

Mourinho has been accused of being outwardly moody and sullen but behind the scenes he can be a very different man when he knows what’s needed.

Mourinho clearly believes there has been enough criticism from outside the club without him needing to add to it and has been doing his best to lift his squad.

The manager of last season’s runners-up to Manchester City has already found himself under pressure just two games into the season.

A win in their opening game to Leicester City was followed up by that woeful 3-2 defeat at Brighton.

The personal criticism in the fall-out from that has understandably irked a manager who put two trophies on the table in his first season at Old Trafford.

The second place last season was the highest since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

That has not been enough for some who want a style to match that which the club’s greatest ever manager provided.

Asked ahead of Monday’s game what style of play Mourinho wanted his team to play he replied: “A winning style. Don’t make defensive mistakes. Be dominant. Make chances, score goals and go home with the three points.”

Some Manchester United fans still want Jose Mourinho to spend more money despite the end of the transfer window.

To be fair to Mourinho he has done that pretty well down the years as an impressive CV shows.

The problem is the bar is a very high one at Old Trafford as both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal found out.

It got the better of both of them and outwardly it appears to be doing likewise with Mourinho…outwardly.

Friday was not a good day with the media for example.
