In fifth place is Brazilian playmaker Phillipe Coutinho who only arrived in La Liga with Barcelona in January. The transfer of Coutinho from Liverpool cost Barca more than 105 million pounds making him the third most expensive footballer of all time. Coutinho is a little magician capable of playing on either flank or through the middle, he has brilliant technique, hat full of tricks and a wicked long shot.

Luis Suarez (£290,000/week)

Another South American who left Liverpool for Barcelona to add to Coutinho, is centre-forward Luis Suarez. The 31-year-old was absolutely sensational in his final season at Anfield winning the Premier League golden boot with 31 goals in 33 games.

Since heading to the La Liga, Suarez has had even more fruitful campaign after breaking the Messi Ronaldo duopoly over the La Liga top scorer title in 2015-16 when he scored 40 league goals and 59 in all competitions. Suarez is Uruguay’s all-time leading goal scorer and he has 24 goals in 40 outings for Barcelona this season.

Gareth Bale (£350,000/week)

Perfect start to the new La Liga season 🙌🏻⚽

Gareth Bale is the third best-paid player in La Liga. Bale became the most expensive footballplayer in the history when he joined Real Madrid from Tottenham in 2013. On the face of it, Bale has done very well winning 10 trophies, including three champions league, in less than five years at the Bernabeu. In truth, however, Bale had a tricky injury-stricken season in which his stock has fallen to the point where he is no longer a key man for Zinedine Zidane and he is the man who has been compared to Messi and Ronaldo only a couple years ago.

Cristiano Ronaldo (£365,000 (After Tax)

Unsurprisingly there is a fair gap between third and a second in this five. Ronaldo is quite rightly one of the best-paid footballers on the planet. An absolute force of nature even at 33, Ronaldo is still one of the best players on the planet.

He had very cleverly modified his game using his brilliant movement, anticipation and dead-eyed ability in front of goal to ensure that the years don’t hit him too hard. Evidently, it worked as Ronaldo scored 42 goals last season and he will better that tally this term since he already has 37 goals in 35 outings to his name, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo has averaged better than a goal a game at Madrid.
