Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho is heading to Rift Valley for a series of events this weekend.

The ODM deputy leader has lined up a number of fundraising activities in the region.

Rift Valley is considered Deputy President William Ruto’s backyard and voted overwhelmingly for Jubilee party last year.

Joho’s visit comes at a time a section of the area MPs have openly expressed discomfort with President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga’s handshake.

The unease follows their reservations with the motive in relation to Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.

Joho has confessed nursing presidential ambitions. He will preside over a fundraising for construction of Alsalam Mosque in Maralal, Samburu county on Saturday.

He will be hosted by Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda – a close ally of the DP.

Joho is also expected to address residents. His handlers said he will take the message of peace and reconciliation for the prosperity of the country.

On Sunday, Joho will pitch camp at Churo Amaya ward in Baringo county where he will preside over another fundsdrive for Churo Girl’s secondary school.

Baringo senator Gideon Moi – a staunch Ruto political critic – will host the governor in the activity which 2022 politics is expected to take centre stage.

“The tour is an extension of the building of bridges initiative, it is all about building the bridges,” Mombasa director of communications Richard Chacha told the Star on Friday.

In March, the Kanu leader and Joho – both with presidential ambitions – had a closed door meeting at Joho’s office in Mombasa, a move that ignited speculations of a possible political partnership between the two.

But Joho downplayed the meeting claiming it was a continuation of the “Building Bridges” initiative by Uhuru and Raila. He said the two of them will be touring the country together to preach unity and peaceful co-existence among Kenyans.

“We will be talking matters inclusion, matters corruption and matters empowerment of our young people,” Joho said then.
