Hugo Lloris arrested for drink driving ahead on Man U clash

Tottenham Hotspur captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was arrested in central London on Friday morning and charged with drink driving after failing a roadside breathalyser test, police have said.

Lloris, 31, was stopped at around 2:20 a.m. and was taken to Charing Cross police station, where he was formally charged before being released on bail.

According to the Metropolitan Police, Lloris is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Sept. 11.

The goalkeeper joined Tottenham in 2012 and has started both of their Premier League games this season after winning the World Cup with France.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “A man has been charged following a routine patrol stop in Gloucester Place, W1.

“Hugo Lloris, 31, of East Finchley was charged with drink driving on Friday, 24 August.

“He has been bailed to return to Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 11 September.”

Lloris has been with Tottenham since 2012 and has made 254 appearances for the north London club.

In a 2016–17 UEFA Champions League group stage match (which ended in a 0–0 draw) against Bayer Leverkusen on 18 October 2016, Lloris made a string of fine saves, including a spectacular one-handed stop on the goal-line to deny Javier Hernández; Tottenham’s manager Mauricio Pochettino described Lloris’s performance in the second half as “brilliant”.On 22 November 2016, Lloris saved Radamel Falcao’s 11th-minute penalty and pulled off multiple world-class saves, including incredibly tipping Kamil Glik’s powerful volley from five metres out over the bar in the 68th minute, in their 2016–17 UEFA Champions League group stage match away at AS Monaco; however Tottenham lost the match 1–2 and were eliminated from the competition.

 

In December 2016, Lloris signed a contract extension to remain at Tottenham until 2022. In the 2016–17 season, Lloris helped Tottenham achieve the best defensive record in the club’s history, conceding only 26 goals in the Premier League this season (only 9 of which were conceded in home league games), 6 better than the previous record of 32 conceded that was set in the 1908–09 season in the Second Division. He kept 15 clean sheets this season, but missed out on the Golden Glove award when a goal was conceded in the last game of the season, a record-breaking 7–1 away league win at Hull.

Tottenham’s next match is at Manchester United on Monday, Aug. 27.
