Why Borussia Dortmund rejected Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata

Spain international Morata was linked with a summer move to the Westfalenstadion, but sporting director Michael Zorc has ruled out such a transfer. Borussia Dortmund have ruled out making a move for Chelsea forward Alvaro Morata this summer. Morata, the Spain international, has been linked with leaving Stamford Bridge over the coming weeks, following his disappointing debut season in London.

The 25-year-old scored just 11 Premier League goals after joining Chelsea for a club-record £60million last year, and such poor form saw Morata dropped from Spain’s World Cup squad. With Antonio Conte, the manager who brought Morata to Chelsea, expected to leave Stamford Bridge this week, it is expected the forward will follow him out the door. And Borussia Dortmund were linked with signing Morata to replace Michy Batshuayi, the Chelsea forward who spent the second half of last season on loan at the Westfalenstadion.

However, the Bundesliga club’s sporting director, Michael Zorc, has ruled out such a move going through as Morata is ‘too expensive’ for BVB. I would say that Morata is too expensive – without knowing exact sums,” said Zorc. Morata was viewed as Dortmund’s replacement for Batshuayi, who in turn replaced Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the Westfalenstadion when he joined Arsenal in January.
