Iran boss instrumental in helping to forge Ronaldo’s future

Carlos Manuel Brito Leal Queiroz, ComIH, is a Portuguese football manager who is currently in charge of the Iran national team.

It was always expected that Cristiano Ronaldo would be a world superstar, ever since he first showcased his talents with Sporting CP’s youth sides. However, like in any other profession in the world, a young person needs to be given an opportunity. After the Portuguese star impressed for Sporting against Manchester United, Alex Ferguson was captivated by the teenage player.

But he gave the final push for Ronaldo’s signing to be made to his assistant coach Carlos Queiroz, a compatriot of the player who was very familiar with his game: “I was his coach and a friend on and off the field,” the current Iran boss said as he prepares to face Ronaldo’s Portugal in the World Cup.

“His decision to move to Manchester and join us actually took place at my house in Lisbon, in my living room together with my family. I asked Sir Alex Ferguson to come to Portugal and complete the negotiations that had take place. I felt that it was my duty as a friend as well as being his future coach, I don’t regret the decision that was made.”
