Fellaini turned down a new deal at the club back in September and he will become a free agent when the clock strikes 12 on Saturday night. Jose Mourinho was optimistic about United’s chances of retaining the Belgian but Fellaini appears destined to leave the club after five years, amid interest from China, Turkey, AC Milan and Arsenal. When asked about his contract situation with United, Fellaini replied: “You will know soon.”

Mourinho stressed in April that if United failed to retain Fellaini he would want to sign two midfielders in the summer transfer window.

“We are going to invest the basic to improve our squad,” Mourinho said after the FA Cup semi-final win over Tottenham. We need to find a replacement for Michael Carrick, if Marouane Fellaini leaves, we need to find a replacement for Marouane Fellaini.”
