Franz Beckenbauer was playing in his first World Cup in 1966 but it certainly did not appear like that. Playing as a defender or a midfielder, he scored four goals as West Germany reached the final. Though it lost to England in controversial circumstances.

He scored a brace against Switzerland on his World Cup debut. He also scored major and crucial goals in the quarter-final against Uruguay and the semi-final against the USSR in the same tournament.

Finally one day, he went on to be the skipper of his country to glory in 1972. Later he also got to taste World Cup success again as manager of West Germany in 1990.
