The day parents drop their children in school for the first time is both the happiest and saddest day of their lives.

They are happy because the child will finally give them some breathing space but sad at the same time because they are afraid for their safety and well-being.

Once school starts, children spend most of their days in the company of classmates and teachers and a lot of their behavior is molded by them.

This is a very critical time in the formation of the child’s character and if the parent is not hands-on and careful, things might spiral out of control faster than they can realize.

The best way for parents to keep a hold on things and ensure that their child is doing well is by playing an active role in their lives even after school.

While the usual picking them from school and asking them how their day was is good, it simply isn’t enough. It signifies a passive form of parenting and the important details can be lost in translation.

Parents can be more involved in their children’s everyday lives by asking better questions that require more detail than ‘it was good’.

Below are some of the questions to ask after school to make you and your child bond closer.

  1. What made you smile today?
  2. Who did you sit with at lunch?
  3. If you could change one thing about today what would that be?
  4. What was the hardest rule to follow today?
  5. Tell me something you found out today that you didn’t know yesterday.

As you can already tell, the nature of these questions is more personal and through them you get to know about your child’s friends, if they are getting bullied in school, what their personality is budding into, what type of things they are into in terms of sports and art, what they are struggling with and how they tackle hardships.

Waiting for a teacher’s report at the end of the term is simply not enough.
