New look Nyayo National Stadium after 2-Year Renovation

The long wait for football fans to enjoy watching the beautiful game at Nyayo National Stadium- the county’s second-largest stadium, could be coming to an end if photos circulating is something to take home.

The 30,000-seater facility was closed down early 2017 for renovations but was briefly opened for the year’s Mashemeji Derby in August before its permanent closure for CHAN 2018 preparations. But, to date, nothing has been forthcoming to an extent that Kenya lost the CHAN hosting rights due to the stadium’s pathetic state.

Through the ministry of Sports, the government has been promising that the facility would be opened for operation since then until this week when pictures showing positive progress found their ways online, thanks to the 2019 national athletic trials held at the facility.

Initially, the government had approved Sh4.2bn for the renovation of a number of stadia including Nyayo, Kipchoge Keino, Kinoru and Kasarani which had been set to host the biennial CHAN tourney. Fortunately, Kasarani was done, leaving Nyayo behind.

This move saw Kenyan Premier League matches banned from the venue. However, football fans are now happy following the announcement that bigwigs AFC Leopards will play their second league match against Kariobangi Sharks on the pitch on Sunday.

Here are some of the photos of the facility before renovation;
