Earlier this week, something happened in Iran. Something that left the world in shock when a 30-year-old girl set herself on fire and later died, for being a football fan.

Identified as Sahar Khodayari, the Esteghlal FC fan was caught trying to sneak into a football stadium as a man, a move which led to her predicament and eventual death.

In Iran, women have been strictly banned from entering football grounds for men’s matches since 1981, in the aftermath of the Islamic revolution two years prior.

Sahar, now popularly referred to as the ‘Blue Girl’ in reference to her favourite team, Esteghlal of Tehran – who play in blue, was to face a higher court penalty, so she decided to escape it by committing suicide. She suffered 90% body burns.

Hundreds of football clubs across the world have condemned the Iranian barbaric rule calling upon the country to allow women to watch football just like men.

Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia have also sent their official condolences to the bereaved family and paid tribute to the deceased supporter of the beautiful game.

“We are sorry & saddened to hear the death of Sahar Khodayari, an Iranian football fan who burnt herself after being charged & sent to jail for going to the stadium to watch her club @EsteghlalFC_En. Football is for all, should be watched & supported by all. RIP Sahar #Sirkal #Esteghlal,” Gor Mahia tweeted.
