Chelsea set to appoint former midfielder as part of their backroom staff

Chelsea is set to name their former midfielder Claude Makelele as their new ‘Young Player Techincal mentor’. Makelele, who also played for Real Madrid will work alongside Petr Cech and Frank Lampard as the Blues revamp their coaching staff with former legends.

Makélélé will also fulfill ambassadorial duties and joins Carlo Cudicini as one of the two new faces alongside old hands Paulo Ferreira, Christophe Lollichon, and possibly Tore Andre Flo (and others less often mentioned) in the loanee department.

The former French international was spent five seasons at the club and won the Premier League twice, in 2005 and again in 2006. He was so good at his defensive midfield role that the position became known as the ‘Makelele Role’.

Should the deal go through, it will be yet another fantastic backroom addition to fr the Blues who already have former midfielder and club’s highest top scorer Frank Lampard while Champions League-winning goalkeeper Petr Cech is the club’s sporting director.

The Blues are gearing up for yet another Premier League season but without their star player last season Eden Hazard who left to join European giants Real Madrid. Their first Premier League match will be against Manchester United at Old Trafford follwed by a European Super Cup clash against Liverpool 3 days later.
