Ethiopia, US conclude military medical readiness drill

ADDIS ABABA –(ENA) A US military medical team and Ethiopian medical professionals have successfully accomplished their joint medical exercise at the Armed Forces Comprehensive Specialized Hospital.

The 18 member U.S team comprises surgeons, anesthesiologist, emergency room personnel, obstetricians and gynecologists, dentists, primary care and public health professionals, it was indicated.

At the conclusion of the three-week long joint medical exercise mission today, Team Leader Colonel Kelly A. Murray told ENA that the Ethiopian military and civilian medical professionals and its US counterpart have had the privilege to work alongside for the past few weeks.

“For the past three weeks, my medical team has been here working with our Ethiopian partners. For us this was incredibly important relationship. We have learned from our Ethiopian medical counterparts some medical tactics and in turn shared our best medical techniques with them,” she pointed out.

Colonel Murray expressed her hope that Ethiopia and US will deepen military medical exercise in the future.She said, “I am confident the success we have experienced here indicates that this has been just the beginning of a valuable partnership that will lead to even greater collaboration in future events.”

Colonel Murray further noted that “our collaboration has also had a positive, constructive and lasting effect on our highly-skilled Ethiopian colleagues as well as on the troops, civilians and families in their care.”

Armed Forces Comprehensive Specialized Hospital Head, Colonel Hagos Asmelash said on his part Ethiopia and US had a long military bilateral cooperation back to the era of Emperor Menelik II.

Ethiopian and American military cooperation has gained momentum in fighting terrorism, he said, adding that this joint medical exercise could demonstrate that the two nations are reinforcing collaborations.

According to Colonel Hagos, the three weeks of joint military medical exercise will help Ethiopian health professionals to give effective medical treatment during casualties and terror attacks. “This joint exercise will help us to deter any causality; and we are happy too with this exercise with our US counterparts,” he noted.

The closing ceremony of the military medical readiness exercise was held at the Hall of the Armed Forces Comprehensive Specialized Hospital.
