BREAKING: Gor Mahia captain set to join Zambian giants

Gor Mahia captain Harun Shakava is set to join Zambian side Nkana Red Devils after parting ways with the Kenyan Premier League League champions.

Shakava had earlier declared his intentions to quit the club at the end of the year when his contract with the Gor expires but the club has now allowed him to leave with five months left on his current contract with Hassan Oktay’s charges.

On Tuesday, Gor Mahia completed the signing of Western Stima captain Maurice Ojwang who is viewed as Shakava’s replacement. Ojwang is expected to partner Joash Onyango at the heart of Gor Mahia defense.

“Shakava has been handed his release letter and he’s heading to Nkana. The Zambians have been trailing him for close to two years now and the player requested that he be allowed to leave now. The management heeded to his demand and he has left. We wish him all the best for the future,” a source from Gor Mahia camp told Opera News.

At Nkana, he will link up with Kenyan duo of Musa Mohamed and Duncan Otieno. The two moved to the Red Devils in 2018 from FK Tirana of Albania and AFC Leopards respectively.

The lanky central defender joined Gor Mahia in January 2014 from the then relegated Kenyan Premier League side, Kakamega Homeboyz. He went on to win five Kenyan Premier League titles with the record champions among other accolades and also featured for the national team, Harambee Stars.

He was widely linked with moneybags Wazito FC but a move failed to materialize after Gor declined to sell him to the newly-promoted side whom they now view as direct rivals.

Coach Hassan Oktay has so far made eight signings as he continues to rebuild ahead of the new season. The new additions include Abdalla Shira and Tobias Otieno from Sony Sugar, Curtis Wekesa and Dennis Oalo from Nairobi Stima, Elvis Ronack from Nzoia, Dickson Ambundo from Alliance FC, David Mapigano from Singida and Maurice Ojwang from Western Stima.

Nine players have left the club. They are: Jacques Tuyisenge who has moved to Petro Atletico in Angola, Francis Kahata who has moved to Simba, Pascal Ogweno has joined KCB and Shakava who is now heading to Zambia. Shaban Odhoji, Cersidy Okeyo, Castro Ogendo, and Erisa Ssekisambu are still to find new clubs after they were released.
