You might be shocked to find out that you have been eating your favourite healthy snacks in the absolute wrong way; tossing out or letting the most nutritious parts go to waste.

A lot of us are making at least one of these mistakes.

1. Eating carrots raw

Surprising? Surely. As much as there’s nothing better than the crispy crunch of a carrot in your mouth, boiling it a bit helps to preserve its nutrients. A bit ironic as a lot of vegetables lose their water-soluble vitamins once they’re boiled.

2. Throwing citrus peels

As much as the peels of fruits like oranges and lemons are bitter, you shouldn’t throw them away as they contain disease-fighting flavonoids. They are also rich in the antioxidant de-limonene, and this stimulates liver enzymes to help flush toxins from the body and improves bowel movements. You should instead keep them for making lemon or orange zest or put them in your water. Refreshing!

3. Slicing strawberries

Doing this exposes them to light and oxygen, which can break down their vitamin C. Instead, they should be eaten whole.

4. Throwing away watermelon seeds

Yes, those seeds can be a bit annoying because you probably just want to enjoy your watermelon in peace, but the seeds are a good source of magnesium, zinc, protein and iron.

5. Peeling cucumbers

The skin of cucumbers are rich in fiber and vitamin A. It also increases the feeling of being full, which can come in handy when you’re trying to lose some kilos.
