Allan Wanga has bowed out of international football. In a letter dated 8th July 2019, Wanga has appreciated the time he was given to represent Kenya and thanked the team, management and fans for the overwhelming support he got.

The 33-year-old currently plays for Kenya Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz as a striker and he is also Kakamega County Government Sports department officer.

Allan Wanga’s journey and achievements

Allan Watende Wanga was born on 26th November 1985 in Kisumu. He started playing in primary school and at various age levels, for now, the defunct FIFA Kingdom, Kisumu-based football club. He joined St Paul’s High School, Shikunga in Butere District, where he also continued with his football career.

In 2005, he played for the Nations League side, Lolwe FC and played for only three months before joining Sher Karuturi. He left Karuturi and stayed for about one year without a club.

In late 2006, he was recalled by Lolwe FC before being picked up by Premier League club Tusker FC in early 2007. He helped Tusker win the League and managed to score a total of 21 goals.

At the end of 2007, he joined the Angolan side Petro Atletico where he helped his club win the League title (Girabola) in his first year. That was Petro Atletico’s first league title since 2001.

He then moved to Azerbaijani club FC Baku at the end of January 2010 on a 6-month contract, renewable for a year. After lifting the Azerbaijan Cup, his optional year contract was not taken up by Baku, and Wanga went on trial with Georgian side Rustavi Olimpi. When the deal hit a snag he called on Baku who could not issue him a work permit until after four months.

At the start of the 2012 Kenyan Premier League, he secured a loan move to AFC Leopards that lasted until 11 November same year before sealing a permanent move to Ingwe.

On 4 June 2014, Wanga left AFC for the Sudanese giants Al-Merrikh on a one-year contract. After exhausting the contract, he moved to Tanzanian giants Azam FC, where he was restricted to only 11 appearances due to personal issues.

He later returned to Tusker in June 2016. He played for about one and-half years before joining Kakamega Homeboyz, where he is currently playing. He is the Sports Director at the County.

Wanga made his international debut for Harambee Stars on 27 May 2007 in a friendly match against Nigeria. He scored his first international goal in a 2-1 loss to Tanzania in the 2007 CECAFA Cup.

The 33-year-old has never featured in the AFCON competitions and this year was the only chance for him to play. Unfortunately, he was among the great players that were left out by head coach Sebastian Migne.

In his letter, Wanga stated that he will shift his mind to his club, Kakamega Homeboyz and Kakamega County, where he was appointed Kakamega County Government Sports department officer.

Wanga was appointed for that position on 4 January 2018 by Kakamega County Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, becoming Kenya’s first active footballer to land such an influential high ranking government role. He is in charge of supporting the county government’s commitment towards sports development which includes overseeing sports policy implementation across the county.
