Brain Bwire the hero as Kariobangi Sharks earn historic win over Everton

Kariobangi Sharks made history by becoming the first Kenyan team to beat an English Premier League side following a 4-3 post-match penalties win over Everton at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi.

Everton fielded a second starting side with the notable names in the starting line being Theo Walcott and former Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes. It was the first team that an English Premier League side was playing in the country.

Kariobangi Sharks went ahead midway through the first half with a well taken Duke Abuya shot. The forward was played through by an excellent through ball from Patilla Omotto. Timing his run to perfection, the forward checked in with his right foot before placing the ball between an Everton defender’s feet and beyond the goalkeeper’s reach. Cue, an uproar from a fully packed  Kasarani Stadium.

Everton awoke from their slumber immediately after the goal and was finally playing to their expected level. One cut back from former Arsenal winger Theo Walcott should have been turned in but Everton somehow missed the target when it seemed easier to score.

The second half started on a faster note with the visitors in clear pursuit of an equalizer. The English Premier League side leveled matters to minutes after the restart. A careless foul just outside the box led to a freekick that was beautifully struck by Joseph Williams to make matters 1-1.

There was no separating the sides after 90 minutes and the match went to penalties. Brian Bwire in the Kariobangi goal made two fantastic stops and converted the winning spot kick to hand Sharks the famous win.
