The knockout stages of the Africa Cup Of Nations Tournament kicks off this Friday. Big teams have been drawn against each other in the first round of 16 draws in the history of the tournament.

The draw threw up some tantalizing fixtures and below we highlight 3 marquee fixtures to look out for

Mali-Ivory Coast(Monday 7 pm)

Two giants in the African game, both teams boast of world class players playing in the best leagues worldwide. Mali has been the most convincing in the tournament thus far and won a group that also had Tunisia and Angola and found the net 6 times, the highest from this year’s Group Stage.

The Ivorians finished second in their group and have in their ranks some of the finest talents the continent has to offer. Big players turn up in the big matches, let’s hope the superstars can rise up to the occasion.

Nigeria-Cameroon(Sat. 7 PM)

With 8 titles between them, this West African affair has the hallmarks of being an AFCON treat. Cameroon has looked solid under Clarence Seerdoff while Nigeria look revitalized playing for Gernot Rohr.

The managers favor an attacking brand of football and luckily for them, there is an abundance of attacking talent in both squads. This one should be edgy and tightly balanced!

Uganda-Senegal

This may be hard to admit, but Museveni’s boys are looking good it actually hurts from a Kenyan perspective. Uganda Cranes produced what is arguably the shock of the tournament with a 2-0 win over DRC Congo in their first match.

The result against Egypt does not tell the full story form the match. Despite losing 2-0, Uganda gave the Pharaoh’s a run for their money and it will be interesting to see how they fair against Senegal.

The Senegal squad is perhaps the best in the tournament but they have looked a bit shaky as seen periods during the first half against Kenya’s Harambee Stars. Can Uganda come up with another surprise?
