AFCON2019: Kenyans back Harambee Stars to storm into quarters

Kenyans have backed the national football team, Harambee Stars to reach the quarter final stage ahead of Sunday African Cup of Nations opener against Algeria in Cairo Egypt.

Stars return to the continental showpiece after a 15-year absence and their first match will be against the North African giants at Air Defence stadium at the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

Opera News conducted a Twitter poll seeking opinion of Kenyans on their expectations with the national team Harambee Stars in Egypt. The poll ran from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd.

122 fans took part in the poll and 30% of the participants observed that Kenya will reach the quarter final stage. 28% feel that the team will crush out at the group stage while an ambitious 27% said the team will go all the way to the final. 15% of the voters observer that the team will exit the tournament at the quarter final stage in Egypt.

Stars camped in France for their pre-AFCON preparations. The team was at the Capital Paris for three weeks and featured in two friendly matches.  Kenya defeated Madagascar 1-o in Paris France before they were held by DR Congo in Madrid Spain.

Kenya landed in Cairo on Wednesday and continued with their preparations for the opening match against the North Africans and captain Victor Wanyama says the team is no under pressure heading into the Algeria game.

“I don’t think we are under pressure. We were under more pressure during qualification. Here we are out to enjoy the game and most importantly show that we are not pushovers.Algeria is a good team. We respect them but on the pitch, we are going to fight. We will try to make it difficult for them,” the Tottenham man said.

Stars has however been dealt a huge blow heading into the game after key defender Joash Onyango was sidelined with injury. The Gor Mahia central defender picked an injury in training further dealing a blow to coach Migne’s plans.
