Police are investigating an incident where a Catholic priest based in Meru was stabbed at a bar he had checked into in the company of two other people.

The three are said to have checked into a popular entertainment joint in Makutano at 4 pm and had been drinking at the spot until 10 pm when the priest booked rooms at the pub for the night.

Reports indicate that the priest identified as Eutycas Murangiri would wake up from his room and walk out to the parking lot, reportedly after seeing someone through the window sitting in his car.

Fr Murangiri would later walk to his car and engage the man who was sitting in his car when the assailant drew a knife.

In the confrontation, media reports indicated that the two people ( a man and a 25-year-old woman) that the priest had checked in with at the joint took off leaving the priest at the mercy of the attacker.

The 32-year-old priest was fatally stabbed twice on the head, sending him down to the ground.

He had just been ordained as a priest in December 2018 and had served for some five months at the Meru diocese

It remains unclear whether the priest had booked a different room for the female patron during the night and police are piecing up evidence that could reveal the motive of the attackers.

However, Murangiri’s father, Mr Dominiciano Muthuri said his son was spotless.

“He was a humble man who never indulged in bad things. We are really hurting,” he confided to Daily Nation.

In the attack where Fr Eutycas’ body was discovered lying in a pool of blood at 1:45 am, Mr Muthuri said his son’s assailants must have set a trap for him before his gruesome murder.

“Eutycas went to the car and found someone inside. He demanded to know what he was doing in the vehicle but his friend took off instead of assisting him or raising the alarm,” he narrated to reporters.

“We were told he earlier walked outside the building with the car keys and could have opened it for the assailant.”

Both the hotel managers and the two in the company of the priests have recorded statements concerning the death, and police towed the priest’s car to the station awaiting forensic dusting for fingerprints according to Imenti North Police boss Robinson Mboloi.
