Harambee Stars in France? See where other teams have camped for AFCON preps

The African Cup of Nation is just a few days to go! Here is where the interest of every footballer will be between 21st June to 19th July.

Historically, the tournament has been dominated by a few and it seems that things may be different this year as all the teams have taken a surefire strategy to lift the trophy.

Egypt have won the trophy 7 times and will be looking forward to lifting it for the 8th time owing to the fact that they are the host of this year’s AFCON tournament.

Cameroon have won it 5 times, Ghana and Nigeria (4 times), Ivory Coast and Congo DR (2 times), Tunisia, Sudan, Algeria, Morocco, Ethiopia, South Africa, Congo and Zambia have lifted the trophy once each.

Interestingly, every team wants to win, which is why it is going to be the most competitive tournament ever.

The line-ups have been named and players have come together for the purpose of training.

However, several teams have embarked on training outside their home grounds. In fact, many have gone outside Africa for their preparations.

Below are some of the teams that are training outside Africa.

Kenya’s own Harambee Stars is currently preparing for the tournament in France before they jet to Egypt. Kenya, however, is not the only country having pre-AFCON training abroad.

Most teams are set to converge in the Middle East where 7 teams will be training ahead of the tournament. Mali, South Africa and Ghana will be training in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. However, South Africa will first train at home before flying to the UAE.

Other countries training in the Middle East are Burundi, Namibia and Uganda. Burundi and Algeria will train in Doha, Qatar. Uganda, on the other hand, are training in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Those heading to Europe for pre-tournament training include Tunisia, Kenya, DR Congo and Madagascar. Tunisia will train in Croatia while the rest in France.

Nonetheless, only a handful of teams are training within the continent.

Hosts Egypt are holding their training at home mostly because it is where the tournament will be held. Tanzania are also doing their training in Cairo to familiarise with the atmosphere in the North African country. Other teams training at home are Senegal, Nigeria, Morocco and Guinea. Benin is training in Morocco.

Notably, fear seems to have engulfed teams that are set to grace the competition as even the most revered teams like Ghana and South Africa have gone oversee for their preparations.
