Following a spate of attacks by machete-wielding criminal gangs, Mombasa residents will need documentation to purchase a panga,

The order came during Madaraka day celebrations where the County Commissioner Evans Achoki gave the decree compelling local retailers to keep records of everyone purchasing a panga from their shops.

Achoki remarked that there was an unusual buying of machetes in the county that lacks explanation.

“Mombasa has no forests and we wonder why people are buying so many pangas. The county security committee has therefore asked all traders to record details of those buying the pangas to monitor how they use them,” Achoki quipped.

In a drastic measure that is seen as a first, Achoki gave out binding orders requiring retailers to note down the Identity Card numbers of all people buying pangas in Mombasa and also their phone numbers.

The county police boss also instructed the retailers to issue buyers with receipts detailing all the particulars of the buyer and their contacts for easier police identification in the event of a crime.

Likoni has been rocked by a spate of gang attacks that have resulted in the deaths of several people with scores more getting maimed from panga attacks.

The other requirement Mombasa residents will have to contend with is the registration of tenants’ details so as to curb drug trafficking.

Achoki said landlords have been permitting criminals to habit their houses, leading to the proliferation of drug trafficking in the region.
