Hackers normally use distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks to knock their targets offline.

The attack has alarmed digital advocates and civil libertarians who say it raises questions over human rights, ethics, and possible breaches of privacy.

Websites affected include those of the National Environment Trust Fund, the Department of Planning and the National Development Implementation Technical Committee.

Also hacked are the websites for the National Youth Service, Department of Petroleum, Refugees Affairs Secretariat at Immigration, the Kenya Meat Commission and the Lake Basin Development Authority.

The hackers placed their logo on the home pages of the websites showing they had taken control of the platforms.

“Hacked by W4r10k, Kurd electronic team,” read the message on the hacked sites.Image result for Huduma number t

The hackers moved in days after Kenya rolled out a plan called the Huduma number to store the fingerprints, eyes, faces, voices, and location of its nearly 50-million population and linking the data to everything from identity cards to access to education, health, and social services.

The single population register was initiated by president Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration in a bid to introduce what he called a single “source of truth” on personal identity in Kenya.

The Information and communications technology (ICT) Authority has since recovered the affected websites which are now under maintenance.

“Sorry for the inconvenience but we’re performing some maintenance at the moment. If you need to you can always contact us, otherwise we’ll be back online shortly!” reads the message on the affected pages
