Was Kakamega Twins saga Blown out of proportion?

You all remember the Kakamega duet? The two identical ladies who graced our headlines. If you don’t clearly recall what transpired, our local media houses did numerous interviews on what was hot on the heels of the buzz around the mystery of the two identical girls, Sharon Mathias and Melon Lutenyo, (most likely twins) who had been separated for 19 years.

The media’s role in any given society is to set the agenda. We can agree that over the years, the mainstream media has propelled certain issues, which have kept the government on check and others highlighted on common mwananchi issues.

The Issue of Kakamega twins has had most of us thinking it was blown out of proportion. Here’s how;

The New York times, a global media house sets agendas. The difference between them and the Kenyan media houses is that it follows up on issues and keeping their audience on the loop. For Example have a look at how New York Times follows up on Trumps stories. On the Left hand side, they highight his storms with democrats, and on the right, they are also hightlighting more issues.

On the other hand, our local media stations simply planted the story of the Kakamega duet but failed miserably to follow through on a decisive conclusion. What happened to the DNA test results? Did we ever confirm that they were ever twins?

These are some of the burning questions that have left Kenyans bamboozled as they sift through half-baked stories! Indeed, the parents of the two girls had indicated they could not afford DNA tests; and one organization offered conduct and foot the bill for the DNA tests on Sharon and Melon.

What’s more, highlighting half the story has created an air of uncertainty and anguish amongst their parents. Perhaps they are yet to confirm whether the duet is truly identical. Most Kenyans want to know whether the test results were released, now that the issue became of national interest.

What’s your take? Do you think the Kenyan media blew the Kakamega story out of proportion?
