Why Man United Performed Dismally This Season

This season will remain memorable to Manchester United in their entire lives. It has been a season marked by several dramas, heartbreaks, and poor form, of course.

United began the season with a poor spell, losing most of their matches under Mourinho.

While they thought Jose Mourinho was the root cause of their poor spell, the problem continued even during the era of the new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United went unbeaten in his first 11 matches, which prompted the club to offer the Norwegian a permanent contract.

But since Solskjaer accepted the full-time role, things have gone downhill and the Red Devils had to settle for sixth, with no trophies come May.

While they failed to appear in the top of the Premier League table, United topped another table- as they picked more injuries compared to any other club in the Premier League.

According to data from Premier Injuries, Solskjaer’s squad suffered 61 separate injuries between August 10, 2018, and May 12, 2019.

That’s far more than any other team in the league, with Tottenham (42), Liverpool (37), Huddersfield (36), Newcastle (36) and Arsenal (35) rounding off the six teams with the most injured stars.

It gets even worse for United, as the data shows their players were sidelined for a combined total of 1,392 days – which is again more than any other club.

Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial had the worst luck, suffering five separate injuries each, while striker Romelu Lukaku had a total of three layoffs himself.

With so many injury problems throughout the campaign, it’s hardly surprising that United could only manage to finish sixth.

Possibly, this could be the main reason why United gave out poor performance.
