Margaret Kenyatta addresses Adolescents health

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has stated that recognizing adolescents as key partners in the realization of Sustainable Development Goals targets is critical during an event dubbed ‘Adolescent health – the Missing population in Universal Health Coverage’ at the 72nd World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland Tuesday.

Mrs Kenyatta said that inclusion of young people in the global health agenda would help in harnessing the demographic dividend and maximize their contribution to global growth.

“We must not accept to reverse the gains we have made in health. We must encourage young people to access health services. Our young people’s priority is not ill-health or disease, it is jobs, relationships and their future,” she pointed out.

Governments need to go beyond focusing on disease among the youth and include investments that enhance self-esteem, determination and resilience, especially among young women.
Universal health coverage (UHC) is rapidly emerging as an essential framework to promote healthy lives and wellbeing for all people.
Improving the health of women, girls and adolescents, is at the centre of UHC’s broad health and development goals, and critical to their achievement.
During the 72nd session of the World Health Assembly, 20-28 May 2019, WHO in collaboration with partners will host events throughout the week that highlight principles, opportunities, and challenges for the inclusion of women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health in national UHC packages.
