Despite both the president and opposition leader’s names being mentioned in the fake gold scam, politicians have in an expected move turned the case to where their allegiances lie.

The scandal has spiraled into yet another weapon of political charades, with leaders from both ends using it to pit crowds against each other.

In a similar most recent move, Kimilili member of parliament Didmus Barasa has asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to arrest Raila.

I urge President Uhuru Kenyatta, as a president who follows the rule of law, the  same way police are arresting youth for drinking illicit brew, they should also arrest Raila for peddling fake gold,” said the Kimilili MP in Swahili.

This follows a recording that circulated on social media suggesting that some information regarding the fake gold scandal was relayed to President Kenyatta, Mr Odinga and Interior minister Fred Matiang’i, and that discussions followed.

A political row that followed the scandal also involved Deputy President William Ruto, who said the Opposition must leave the president’s name out of what he calls ‘their illegal gold business’.

Speaking on Saturday in Trans Nzoia, the Deputy President said “these people who are political conmen turned business conmen should carry their cross alone”.

“I tell our brothers in the Opposition not to import their bad habits to Jubilee; they should shun engaging in dirty deals, corruption and coning others,” he added.
