‘He did not deserve to die’, family demand justice for son who was killed for stealing shoe polish

A Bomet Supermarket has gotten itself into a bigger brawl after its staff ganged up to kill a shop lifter they caught.

Staff at the Green Rose Supermarket, according to police reports are the ones who colluded to kill 23-year-old Benjamin Kirui for stealing shoe polish, an not a mob.

“He was not beaten by a mob but by the supermarket’s staff. We have information he was locked up in the store and beaten. We are calling on the police to get to the bottom of the matter so that we can get justice,” said Robert Rono, Kirui’s uncle.

The victim, who is also a boda boda rider, is said to have stolen shoe polish worth Sh2,000 last week before the shop attendants attacked him.

The management of the supermarket has, however, distanced itself from the incident, saying the victim was attacked as he tried to flee and that all they did was rescue him.

They were however forced to close it on Saturday after angry residents threatened to storm it. The residents accused its management of lying that the Kirui was attacked by a mob.

Rono wants the police to review CCTV footage at the supermarket.“We are not happy with the investigations so far. Even if our son was trying to steal, he did not deserve to die. Instead of beating him to death, they should have charged him in court,” he said.

He added that they will relentlessly follow the case up, as the murderers of their son are still out roaming the streets.
