Grief has gripped Uganda after a boat carrying footballers and fans capsized in Lake Albert following a heavy storm.
Reports by the state-owned paper New Vision indicated that some three people had been confirmed dead, while 20 others injured.
However, Daily Monitor reported that 30 people are feared dead from the accident.
Passengers of the ill-fated boat are reported to have been travelling fro Fofo to Ruinga to participate in a football tournament involving both men and women.
The Daily Monitor quoted Sadic Nyangireki, the Nyakabingo parish youth chairman and a businessman at Fofo, as saying the accident could have been caused by overloading and a strong wind that blew shortly after the boat left the landing site.
“The boat capsized about 300 metres after taking off from the landing site,” said Mr Nyangireki.
“The coxswain attempted to return to the landing site when the winds started blowing but the boat capsized,” he said.
Further reports indicate that some 25 people were rescued from the accident scene, a majority of whom were fishermen.
In the deadly accident, a female goalkeeper is said to be among the dead.
