These days it’s called self-love, not sure why but it seems like the other kind of love is overrated and the scientists have proven it.

As much as it is a topic that is avoided by most people, the actual truth is that the younger generation prefer to masturbate than have some nice time with their partner

The survey, by sexual wellness company Tenga, asked 10,000 men and women across nine countries about their sex lives, including why and how often they masturbate.

While many people would fiercely deny that they masturbate, the survey revealed that the majority of the UK (93% of men and 88% of women) does it.

Surprisingly, the results also revealed that 27% of women and 21% of men find masturbating alone more pleasurable than sex.

The key reason that respondents gave for this was sexual performance anxiety – something that isn’t an issue when alone.

In fact, 56% of British men and 54% of British women said they’ve felt pressured to ‘perform’ sexually or experienced sexual performance anxiety.

This includes feeling pressured to delay, quicken, or achieve orgasm, to pleasure their partner or themselves, to get or stay aroused, and to engage or avoid certain positions.

Alix Fox, Tenga brand ambassador, said: “I’m pleased that ‘solo sex’ is starting to be righteously framed as a valid part of the self-care movement, as I’m all for anything that encourages people to view masturbation and self-exploration not as a taboo, shame-saturated, grubby sin to carry out furtively and guiltily, but instead as a healthy way to unwind, enjoy and celebrate their bodies, and better connect to and understand themselves.

“There’s a lot of emphasis in the self-care space on being kind to yourself; paying proper attention to your physical and emotional feelings; and learning to treat your body with compassion, respect and reverence – all messages I think are crucial to apply to the way we view ourselves sexually.

“We need to have more open conversations about masturbation and recognise that making ourselves feel good is a good thing.”
