Nairobi MCA Determined to Challenge Raila’s Man Junet in 2022

As the 2022 politics takes shape, Suna East member of parliament and Raila’s close man Junet Mohamed is a man facing an uphill task in his bid to retain the constituency’s seat after a Nairobi MCA Elias Otieno announced his interests to take on Mohamed in 2022.

Speaking on Saturday when he presided over a fundraiser held in the constituency, Otieno said the time has come for him to come home and serve his constituents promising them of great changes when he takes over from Junet in 2022.

Otieno’s announcement is likely to strain the ODM Party as the two are high up in the Orange Party echelons. Hon Junet is not only the ODM Party director of elections but also the whip of the party and minority coalition in the national assembly while Elias Otieno is the minority leader in Nairobi County Assembly.

The show of might, coming at a time candidates are beginning to build grassroots support has shocked Junet’s corner, though sources reveal the MP is downplaying it.

In a WhatsApp group, supporters of Otieno accused Junet of trying to meddle with the funds drive by persuading local leaders not to attend although a close confidante of Junet has dismissed the allegations.

“That’s rubbish. He (Otieno) holds Harambees in this same place all the time. It is his home area. Mheshimiwa contributes to the Harambee every time he is informed,” he said, requesting anonymity.

Sources claim Ksh5 million was raised. The official figure has not been revealed. The chief guest was none other than Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

In the last polls, Otieno who was defending his seat in Kileleshwa Ward lost to a woman aspirant but was issued the ODM ticket in mysterious circumstances.

The matter wound up in courts where ODM entered into an agreement to nominate the lady contestant. Perhaps, still smarting from the shock defeat, and the fact that the party might not give him the ticket again in 2022, Otieno has decided to change his political base from Nairobi to Suna East. He hails from the constituency.

Elsewhere, a fierce supremacy war pitting Junet and the current Migori governor Okoth Obado has also persisted in Migori. The county assembly is paralyzed with coups and counter-coups.
