Nick Mwendwa Bashes Critics For Complaining About Inclusion of K. Sharks Keepers in AFCON Squad

Harambee Stars are set to grace the African Cup of Nation (AFCON) in June 21, for the first time after 15 years.

Kenyans are hopeful for a better return from this Africa’s elite competition. Spirits are high not only for the players but also for fans.

This is the reason why Kenyans are keenly following the progress as it unfolds.

On Tuesday, Harambee stars coach Sebastian Migne named a 30-man provisional squad that is set to represent Kenya in the competition.

However, many fans complained about the inclusion of two Kariobangi Sharks goal Keepers, who will be alternating among themselves as they have recently been doing.

But fans complained of unfairness stating that all other Premier League teams should have been given the chance to showcase their talents.

This anger has prompted Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa, who is also the owner of Kariobangi Sharks to defend the selected squad. Mwendwa claimed that it is the coach who decides the players he chooses and Kenyans should not view them according to their clubs.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa

“It is an unfair argument thinking that a player should not be included in the national team just because he plays for Sharks,” Mwendwa told Business Today. “If the player is good then he deserves an opportunity. Hii Story ya Sharks itakuwanga tu, haitaisha (The issue with Sharks will always be there)”

“It is a political argument. Only two players from Sharks made it to the squad. What’s wrong with that? Sometimes, people want to bring politics just because I come from Sharks. Should Sharks be closed now that I am President?” Mwendwa charged.

Fans were also astonished to find out that Jesse Were and David Cheche were not included in the squad.
