The writing was already on the wall, with clear handwriting, and in caps. From the moment Jose Mourinho stepped foot in pre-season training last summer with Manchester United, it was what he thought of his squad, not good enough! The Portuguese manager, a two time European Champion and 3 times Premier League winner had spent the previous season chasing Pep Guardiola and Manchester City’s shadow but to no avail, in the end, his team finished 18 points behind the Champions.

It is perhaps a true reflection of Man City’s quality that Mourinho declared that season his best ever, despite not winning any silverware and as aforementioned, finishing 18 points behind the leaders. Fast Forward to December and Mourinho’s tenure at the most successful English team was ended following a 3-1 defeat by arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

Manchester United were 6th on the log at the time of his sacking with many blaming Mourinho for the club’s decline. In came Ole Gunnar who is a legend at the club and he enjoyed a very healthy first few months at the club, winning his first 10 competitive fixtures that included away days in the FA Cup at the Emirates and Stamford Bridge, Mourinho was clearly the problem!

Except he wasn’t! With the Premier League season well and truly over, Manchester City retained their crown with 98, a point ahead of Liverpool while Manchester United who were second last season finished 6th with 66 points, a whopping 34 points behind the leaders!

Even Arsenal who were in a transitional season following the departure of Arsene Wenger after 22 years still managed to finish above Manchester United. Ole Gunnar’s early promise shortly after his appointed has faded away so badly that he could not only manage in his last two matches against Huddersfield and Cardiff City, both of whom will be playing in the Championship next season!

As Jose Mourinho clearly stated in countless interviews prior to his sacking, there is a player quality problem at Manchester United. The problem is made even worse by the fact that those responsible for fixing it are busy awarding new contracts to the likes of Phil Jones and Ashley Young while Ander Herrera is left to leave on a free transfer!

Unless something drastic changes, Manchester United decline is set to continue at an even faster rate!
