Neville admits ‘champion team’ Liverpool proved him wrong

Gary Neville has hailed Liverpool as “a champion team” after their greatest Premier League season.

Liverpool recorded the third-highest Premier League points total in history yet still missed out on their first title since 1990 due to Manchester City’s brilliance.

The Reds won nine consecutive league games to end the domestic season, last dropping points on March 3.

Neville felt they “would fall in the last month,” but has paid tribute to a team that could still crown this campaign with a sixth Champions League trophy.

“They’re far better than I ever imagined. They’ve done far more than I ever imagined,” he told Sky Sports.

“I never thought that that squad was capable of mounting a challenge for the title like they have, and the Champions League.

“I thought they would fall in the last month. Incredible credit to them – they’ve played like champions all season. They’ve performed like a champion team.”
