Olive Mugenda celebrates as daughter attains Ph.D 30 years after she obtained hers

Former Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Olive Mugenda’s daughter has graduated with PhD from Purdue University in the US. Daily Active has learned that Angie Mugenda was conferred with a doctorate degree in Astronautical and Aeronautical Engineering on Saturday, May 11.

In a brief statement, the former VC congratulated her daughter for her academic achievement and asked her to use her knowledge to transform society. “Blessed to attend my daughter’s graduation at Purdue University – USA. Congratulations my dear girl, Angie, on attaining your PhD in Astronautical and Aeronautical Engineering. Use your skills to leave a mark wherever you go. You have made me a proud mother,” the don tweeted.

 

 

Angie joins her mother in the list of hardly 15,000 Kenyan scholars who have been awarded PhDs in their fields of study.

Saturday’s event, according to Purdue, was part of a series of six commencement ceremonies sectioned into divisions that started on Friday 10.

Angie’s fourth division ceremony saw students from Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Construction, Electrical and Computer, Engineering Education, Environmental and Ecological as well as Industrial and Nuclear also graduate.

Her mother Mugenda, who was recently appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta as non-executive chair of Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital board, obtained her PhD in 1988 from IOWA University.

Mugenda is an alumnus of the University of Nairobi where she was awarded her undergraduate degree in education. She also goes into history as the first woman to win the prestigious ‘Impact Research and Science in Sub-Saharan Africa’ award.
