According to a fourth-year student, s3x in campus happens in the heat of the moment. “You are from raving, you are high and you have unprotected sex. It’s what we call an ‘Oops moment,’’

Public campuses provide condoms in both male and female hostels, but many students think they are too ‘cheap’ and since in campus, the biggest worry is getting pregnant, men are ready for the after show armed with the dose— the emergency pill.

This pill is supposed to be used only in emergencies but girls have turned it into their regular birth control pill, to pop after those ‘Oops moments’.

For their own assurance, young men in the campus are now stocking these morning-after emergency contraceptive pills in their rooms and make their girlfriends take them the morning after. Young men are now controlling contraception.

Most girls admit that the guys would rather forego the condom, especially if they are in an exclusive relationship.

“The e-pill in the campus today is like a painkiller! Boys buy these pills in bulk,” says Maureen.

For starters, the e-pill, is very affordable, retailing for about Sh150. Secondly, they are available over the counter in any chemist in town, at any time.

The consumption of this pill has become frequent and casual, and is now a worrying trend.

Dr John Ongech, head of the department for Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Kenyatta National Hospital says ideally it is for, “when you forget to take you daily pills, or in the unfortunate case of rape.”

He adds that the greatest danger with the e-pill is the high hormone concentration, which disrupts the menstrual cycle and could eventually stop them causing more complications.
