Machakos County has built new houses for police officers as revealed by Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua during a handover at Athi-River station.
The newly built houses are to be occupied by police officers in Athi-River area as a sign of respect the County has for the police force. Other than the houses, Machakos County has also installed CCTV cameras and provided vehicles to the officers for policing.
Salaries and Housing Allowance
Dr. Alfred Mutua admits that the police officers have received an increment in salaries but considering they are on the receiving end of bullets, they are not paid enough.
The Machakos Governor continues by applauding the efforts done by retired president Mwai Kibaki and now president Uhuru Kenyatta on police welfare but he says the situation is still bad.
“However, the reality is that for many years, unlike their counterparts in Europe, Australia, Canada, the United States, South Africa and other nations, our police officers have not been treated well and fairly. This is especially so on remuneration, benefits and housing.”
MP’s Salary Increment
The Governor further voiced his concerns of adding house allowance to police officers and not politicians as they protect them while they lie warm at night.
“If the economy is not able to increase housing allowances for police officers, then it is not able to increase housing allowances for MPs, Governors or even the President. Kenya needs to be a fair country that takes care of all of us and not just leaders.”
