Ajax’s Poor Home Record In The Champions League

Can Tottenham turn their Champions League semifinal tie around against Ajax?

Spurs take on the Dutch giants on Wednesday.

Ajax won 1-0 in north London following Donny van de Beek’s goal.

Since Ajax have won the Dutch Cup. Last weekend they beat Willem II 4-0 in the final.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are in poor form having lost their last three matches 1-0.

Indeed, Spurs have lost five of their last six games in all competitions.

Ajax’s poor home record in the Champions League
Nevertheless, Tottenham may be encouraged by Ajax’s recent Champions League home record.

Ajax last won a home Champions League match on October 23 this season. That was a 1-0 win against Benfica.

Since that victory, they’ve drawn 3-3 at home to Bayern Munich, lost 2-1 at home to Real Madrid, and drawn 1-1 with Juventus.

Of course, should Ajax draw with Tottenham, that would be enough to book the Eredivisie side’s spot in the Champions League final.

Back to the stats, Ajax last won a home game in a Champions League knockout round on March 20, 1996.

That was a 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, as Kiki Musampa scored the winner 15 minutes from time.

Another eye-catching stat
Great stat right there. 17 times a club won the first leg away from home in a UCL/EL semi-final. 16 out of those 16 times, that same club went through to the final. One single time, a team managed to turn it around after losing the first leg at home.
That team was Ajax, in 1996.
