A father and his son who died in separate tragic incidents, two weeks ago, were buried in a low-key ceremony.
This, in a rare case entailed, no speeches during the burial of Stanley Kanyoro, 46, and his son David Munene, 21. The ceremony was held at their Gitumbi village home in Kirinyaga Central lasted less than one hour.
Munene committed suicide while his father was burnt alive in his house after he chased away mourners who were planning his son’s burial.
Menene took his life due to frustrations he was going through after his father reportedly abandoned him, his brother who is bedridden and their younger sister, according to neighbours.
Neighbours said Kanyoro neglected the two after parting ways with their mother a few years ago.The burials were conducted by Kangaita Catholic Parish Fr James Karoki. No eulogies were read except a sketchy funeral programme which did not even indicate the names of the fallen.
“Munene had been taking care of his siblings alone and it has not been easy for him,” said Judy Wagatwe. Former area Senator Daniel Karaba attended the ceremony but was not allowed to address the mourners. The funeral ceremony started at 10am with a family member inviting the priest, who quickly took mourners through Catholic Church burial rituals. Kanyoro was buried on his land and Munene at his grandparents’ homestead.
