Uproar in Nyanza as Luos miss out on handshake goodies

Self-proclaimed NRM General Miguna Miguna was recently bashed by the Raila sympathizers when he claimed that the only benefit that Nyanza region has gotten from the handshake is President Kenyatta’s visit to Raila’s home in December last year.

You can hate Miguna Miguna as much as you like but insults can’t help here. The only way to counter this claim is to provide other facts that we don’t know. Can Raila tell his people how the handshake has benefited his people?

Before his departure for China last week, Raila had confidently announced that the new SGR line would unlock Nyanza’s untapped economic potential.

He told his supporters that the China trip was crucial in securing the loan.

“I will be part of the delegation that will accompany the President to the Asian country next week. The new SGR line will extend from Naivasha to Narok, Bomet, Sondu and finally Kisumu,” the former Prime Minister said.

But we know very well what happened in China and Raila is now at crossroads to explain to his people how they will get the goodies he promised.

“It is Raila himself who told us that his handshake with Uhuru would bring development to our region that has economically been marginalised for many years,” an ODM MP protested.

On Friday, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed 18 High Commissioners and Ambassadors. There was only one Luo in the list which had 13 people from Mt. Kenya. Is this what Raila went to negotiate for?

Raila is now under pressure to ensure the SGR reaches Kisumu as he had promised. After all, the railway line from Mombasa to Naivasha was build by taxpayers money. Everyone who pays taxes mush enjoy its goodies.

“The SGR from Mombasa to Naivasha is built by taxpayers’ money. It does not make economic sense if the railway ends in Naivasha. It must reach Kisumu as we were promised. Our people are eager for this project,”  says Uriri MP Mark Nyamita.
