The Kenyan lady, Achieng Agutu, was reunited with her family at Ellen’s show after having stayed for two years without meeting them. However, Kenyans stormed social media with mixed reactions after Achieng claimed that she learnt English through music lyrics and watching Ellen’s show.
Here are some of the reactions; Penny Musengi: This is amazing!!! So happy for the family, great work Ellen..though English is our official language in Kenya, she was definitely taught in school maybe improved my watching shows…๐
Catherine Mbagaya: you are right, both English and Kiswahili are official languages.. according to the constitution. But English is the de facto official language… the language of instruction at all education levels and language of official communication in government and private offices
Lawrence Murage: SWAHILI is our national language. This other thing called English is foreign and we only learn it to fit in.
Caroline Messo: English & Swahili are the official languages in Kenya. Check latest fact book
Chris Benchpress: Nakuambia ule upuzi uko Kenya ni mwingi sana
Fiona Ahao: Wacha๐. English is official language Swahili national language
Illodanga: ๐ย ๐.. How she put it though sounded like sisi ni mazuzu wa English. Learnt English from watching the show?
Winnie Amolo: if Swahili is the official language why are all subjects and courses in schools and university taught in English ? Did anyone ever teach you math or biology or even chemistry in Swahili ? What about your job applications do you send them in Swahili ?ย ๐คท๐พโโ๏ธ
Nyambu Ossi: Sisi wakenya na kamuwasho? Naenda hiyo show nianze kudance am kubeg munioni my 8siblings hapo
Wamaa Stone: Kanyagieni hiyo story. Lazima angefanya hii story ikae more interesting. Tunajua kimombo ni one of the official languages na tunafunzwa hivyo lakini walami hawajui hivyo. Hii story lazima ikuwe juicy pia na more touching so kanyagieniย ๐๐๐๐.
Wama Stone: hawa wasee huwa ignorant sana. So from experience I have learned to dance to their ignorance since sina hiyo energy ya kujaribu kuchange mindset yao. I remember once nikiulizwa why my English is so good yet am from Africaย ๐ค๐. Gave them the same story – by watching TV and teaching myself. Another one asked me how we live with wild animalsย ๐, well it’s because we speak their language and have learned to co-exist together. Hata sijafikia maswali za ukingoย ๐๐คจ. I think wanafeel poa wakifikiria wanatusave. Wale wamecome kuvisit though wako more exposed. ย
Ilodanga Kutima: ๐ย ๐ย ๐.. I know, most of them are not exposed and that’s why they still think of us a backward. Then again some of us who seek aid from them them us look so backward so that they can get grants from them..
