Embattled Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu has claimed that he is being persecuted because of his unwavering support for DP William Ruto’s Presidential ambitions.

Through a statement released on Thursday, Waititu said that the summons to appear in the Senate over the alleged misappropriation of more than Ksh 2.9 billion shillings were politically engineered to embarrass him and his government.

“From the ongoing arrests and intimidation, it is no longer a secret that this is 2022 politics at play and the players in this scheme are well known. Let them remain assured that we are strongly behind our Deputy Party Leader.” Reads part of a statement sent to media houses.

Waititu is one of the few Mt. Kenya leaders that are still behind Ruto’s Presidential ambitions. He is the only governor who has accompanied the DP on various functions across the region. There have been suggestions that he could be the running mate.

The governor is accused of spending millions on budgets like Free Primary Education, coordination of State House Projects and support of South Sudan’s peace process.

On Thursday, State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita said they do not share any budgets with Kiambu County.

Waititu has given several reasons for the anomaly saying the documents could have been maliciously sneaked into their report, he said the allocations were generated by former governor William Kabogo’s government and now he is blaming political witch hunt.

Kenyans have called for the governor to be arrested and charged of misappropriation of funds.
