Conspicuously missing from the scene were leaders mostly associated to Deputy President William Ruto’s side of Tanga-tanga. But what actually informed their absence from a national event?

Politicians allied to Deputy President William Ruto were amply tipped that the narrative at yesterday’s Labour day celebrations held at Uhuru Park grounds was purposely tailored to target their Tanga tanga outfit and their patron.

The speakers were carefully picked to launch attacks on the said wing of the ruling Jubilee Party. Some Ruto MPs were overheard claiming how such an important national workers event could be turned into a political rally against corruption.

Trade unionists and politicians at the event warned Kenyans to prepare for mass action if the government fails to tame corruption. The leaders said that corruption saw the government’s appetite for debts go up while many of wananchi remained poor.

“We should move from the handshake to handcuffs to tame corruption and ensure Kenyans access good health and education among other basic needs,” ANC leader Musalia said.

Cotu boss Francis Atwoli warned the government to address wastage of public resources and rampant stealing instead of highly taxing the workers. He said workers are ready to go to the streets to demand their right.

“Even the thieves are using other means to change the laws to steal from the poor workers. We will not allow workers to be used,” Atwoli said.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka said the corrupt have always taken Kenyans for a ride and it’s time wananchi stood against them. Kenya National Union of Teachers secretary-general Wilson Sossion said the option Kenyans have if prosecution of suspects has failed is mass action.

“We can’t have lazy people benefiting from the sweat of poor workers. Let us respect what belongs to Kenyans,” Sossion said.

But the highlight of the event was when irate youth stormed the National Labour Day celebration at Uhuru Park Nairobi demanding for a revolution as they protest against poor leadership that has come with high cost of living standards.

The protesters dominated by bodaboda operators temporarily brought operations to a standstill at the Uhuru Park which witnessed a handful number of Kenyans who had turned out for the event as opposed to past similar functions which had attracted large crowds.

The group carrying a banner and donned in t-shirts labeled Sonko Defence Forces (SDF) made their way into Uhuru Park running, shouting and blowing whistles as presentations by entertainment groups were ongoing.
