Why Increased Minimum Wage For Workers is Always a PR Stunt

While Labour Day celebration was meant to address the plight of workers and help improve their working conditions and well-being, most Kenyans don’t always benefit from it.

Why? Because Kenyan leaders have prioritized politics and empty promises rather than proper service delivery.

Even though Labour Day celebrations have come with increased minimum wage for Kenyans, many Kenyans still undergo hardship and live for less than $4 per day.

Even after the announcement of the increased wage, life always become even harder for average Kenyan.

Why? Because the government always take advantage of the increased wage to increase the prices of commodities.

A good example is May 1, 2018 Labour Day celebration.

President Uhuru Kenyatta through CS Ukur Yattani announced a 5 percent increase in the minimum wage in Kenya.

In the same year, Kenyans experienced an increase in the price of several basic commodities including maize flour, fuel, electricity, transport, healthcare among others.

To sum up, workers always end up using their increased wage to pay for the increased prices of basic commodities, which they must use.

What Kenyans are longing to see is the sincerity in our leaders rather than just publicity stunt.
